Examining Your Community’s Source of Energy

Assignment 1: Examining Your Community’s Source of Energy
It is easy to criticize society for not using renewable resources, but in reality, how difficult would this transition be? What processes and procedures would be involved? How would such a transition be made?
The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider what type of energy your neighborhood is currently powered by and what it would really take to convert this source to a renewable one. How much would it take to switch your community to a renewable resource and what would this mean for the environment?

For the assignment, complete the following:
Identify three primary types of energy that powers your home as well as all of the homes in your community. You may find this information on your community Web site or the Web sites of the local power companies. For example, your community may use electricity and solar panels. Explain how the sources of energy you identified impact the environment. Consider the following: Does the use of these types of energy resource have a negative impact on the environment in your area? Does your community have nuclear waste to dispose of? Has your community always used these three power sources? If so, how do you feel this has impacted the environment over time? How much of an impact have these sources of energy had on local air and water quality? Considering the current source(s) of power available, determine how much energy your house uses each month. You can find this information on your monthly energy bill. Calculate your annual usage for a year. Using this value, estimate the energy consumption for your community. The US Census Bureau is one resource you can use to estimate the number of households in your community.
You can use the following formulae for this calculation:

(monthly energy usage) × (12 months per year) = (household energy usage per year); (yearly energy estimate for your house) × (estimated number of houses in your community) = (estimated yearly energy use for your community)
The following is an example of the above calculation:
52.8 kilo watts per hour (kwh) × 12 months = 633.6 kwh; 633.6KWH × 200 houses in your community = 126,720 kwh
Recommend a realistic, renewable resource to power your community, using your calculated power needs. Consider the following sources: hydropower, solar power, wind turbines, and geothermal energy. Which source would be the best for your community? Justify your choice based on the kind of resources that are available, how much power these alternative sources can produce, and your estimated energy demands for the community. Having recommended an alternative power source, conclude by addressing the following: How realistic is this alternative power source for your community? How will people in your community respond to energy conversion? Will they support it or be against it? Give reasons. How expensive would it be to convert to the alternative power source you recommended? How would this new source impact the environment? What organisms would benefit most from this conversion? Support your statements with appropriate examples and approximately 4–6 credible resources.
Write an 8–10-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc.

Renewable Resources

Assignment 1: Discussion—Renewable Resources
Each type of proposed renewable energy has its benefits and drawbacks. For example, hydropower has the benefit of relatively consistent results; however, it remains controversial due to its impact on aquatic environments.
For this assignment, select one renewable resource to examine its benefits and drawbacks.

Using this module’s readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:
Describe the sources of this renewable resource. Explain how this renewable resource is harnessed for energy. Considering that it takes energy to make energy, identify the kind of energy needed to make electrical energy from this resource. State the average amount of energy this renewable source produces. For example, on average, how much energy does a single wind turbine produce in a year? Or, how much energy does a dam produce in a year? Or, how many wind turbines would be needed to produce the same amount of energy as the average dam? Compare and contrast the benefits and drawbacks of the renewable energy resource. Support your statements with scholarly references and appropriate examples.
Write your initial response in a minimum of 350–400 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Develop the project scope statement and the project charter

Our initial decision to locate our China operations in Hangzhou was driven largely by the fact
that our Chinese partners already had facilities there and the city’s proximity to the Qiantang
River. We thought that the river access which led on to Hangzhou Bay would be sufficient to
handle our shipping needs.
As the production volume from the China plant has increased, we are seeing that significant
savings can be had by utilizing container shipping companies such as the China Shipping
Container Lines, a branch of the China Shipping (Group) Company. Most of the container
shipping companies utilize ports in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
While the Shanghai port is only 180 kilometers away from our current location, we are incurring
additional logistical steps in shipping out of Shanghai.
· Currently, our products are trucked to a port on the Qiantang River and loaded into
shipping containers. The containers are then loaded onto barges that make their way to
the Shanghai port. The barges dock in Shanghai where the containers are offloaded
and trucked to another area of the port where they are loaded onto to the ships that will
take them to their final destinations.
· Alternatively, we could transport the products by truck to the port at Shanghai where
they would be loaded into containers and then directly onto the ships that will be taking
them to their final destinations. However, the trucking companies, knowing that they are
being used as an alternative to the local shipping companies to move the same products
to the Shanghai ports, generally charge just as much as the shipping companies for the
same volume of goods.

We believe that the relocation of the China operations to the city of Shanghai will result in
significant cost savings, will provide our operations with a more substantial urban infrastructure
and will put us into a better position to market and ship our Chinese products throughout Asia
and Europe.

DEBATE REVIEW AND DISCUSSIONS ASSIGNMENT
The writing of the four page minimum paper is not captured by the five hour online aspect of the online portion. The focus for the debate assignment is to continue to pay attention to any definite arguments – the V and T argument structures (identify at least two), but this time pay more attention to the conditional types of arguments that may arise within the documentary. These are statements are include things like, “If this, then this.” Or “Either this or this” – or any of the valid forms we looked at in class. Once you have identified at least 4 throughout the movie, diagram them either through a sentential structure or a symbolic one and briefly describe how they are used in the documentary. For a bonus, see if you can find an invalid argument – one that either denies the antecedent or affirms the consequent.

Aboriginal sovereignty, economic development & colonialism - 1 -

GGR 202: Where in Canada? (Winter 2014)
Short Paper 1:
Aboriginal sovereignty, economic development & colonialism
Due date: In Tutorial, Wednesday, February 5th
Weight: 20% of final mark
Assignment objective
For this assignment, you will submit a short paper on the relationship between Aboriginal people’s sovereignty claims, economic development and colonialism in Canada. Your tasks are as follows:
1. Choose one recent example (since 2000) of Aboriginal people resisting an economic development project in Canada. Such projects might include fishing, mining, real estate development, leisure, tourism, oil extraction, pipeline construction or logging. Pick three news articles about your example and analyse, using the above articles, how they portray the interests of and relationships between Aboriginal people, the government and other actors.
2. Read and analyze the following articles, paying particular attention to what they have to say about Aboriginal people and economic development projects:
 Menzies, C. (1994). Stories from home: First Nations, land claims and Euro- Canadians. American Ethnologist, 21(4): 776-791.
 Johnson, D. (2011). From the tomahawk chop to the roadblock: discourses of savagism in whitestream media. American Indian Quarterly, 35(1): 104-134.
In your paper, make sure to engage the following questions:
1. How do your news articles portray the conflict between Aboriginal people, economic actors and the government? What do they have to say about the relationship between Aboriginal people’s protest tactics, their claims to land and resources, and the reactions of economic actors and the government?
2. Using Menzies and Johnson, explain what these conflicts tell us about the geographies of colonialism in Canada in both the past and the present. What do they have to say about (a) Aboriginal sovereignty claims, (b) the relationship between the Canadian government and Aboriginal people, and (c) the conflict generated by development projects? In what ways are Johnson’s and Menzies’ arguments and approaches similar to and different from each other?
- 2 -
Requirements and instructions
1. Your paper should be between 3.5 to 4 pages (+ a ‘Works Cited’ page) double spaced, with 1” margins on all sides and use 12-point Times New Roman font. Your name, student number and the course title and number should be included on top.
2. It should include (i) a brief introduction in which you state the main points of your paper, (ii) a main section in which you lay out your critical summaries of Menzies and Johnson and your analysis of the three news articles, and (iii) a short conclusion in which you connect your points together and wrap up.
  •
3. Your paper should be properly referenced. This means that ideas, concepts, arguments, themes and direct quotations that you draw from other people (including Menzies, Johnson and the news articles) must be referenced in-text. You also need to provide a bibliography or ‘Works Cited’ page along with your 3.5-4 page paper. For this course, you are required to use APA style in-text citations in the author-date-page format, with full bibliographic information in a ‘Works Cited’ page. Do not use footnotes or endnotes for citation purposes.

Research Proposal

Develop an original research study proposal and describe it in detail in a 10-12 page (APA style) paper. Include at least 10 scholarly references in your proposal. Use the following outline as a guide when writing your paper. Be sure to include detailed information on all of the topics listed below and use headings to organize your thoughts.

1. Statement of the problem: Introduce the reader to the problem to be studied. Provide sufficient background information such that the reader has a grasp of the situation and its importance.
2. Review of the literature: Provide the reader with a review of most relevant literature, beginning with general information, and narrowing the focus to the specific issues under consideration in the study.
3. Purpose of the study: Identify why the study that you are proposing is needed.
4. Hypotheses or research questions: List them as simple statements. Make sure they are measurable.
5. Definition of terms: Operationally define terms the average reader may not know, or that have a specific meaning in your study. 6. Assumptions: Identify issues you assume to be true in order for your study to be valid.
7. Research methods and procedures
a. Population: Describe the population sample to be studied
b. Procedure: Discuss how the study will be carried out.
c. Instruments: Describe the specific measurements (instruments) to be used to test each hypothesis (research question).
d. Data Analysis: Describe the procedures you intend to use to analyze the data produced from your instruments, and how that would answer the hypotheses (research questions).
e. Discussion: Since you are only proposing (not conducting) a research study, you will not have results; however, you can discuss potential outcomes. Review your hypothesis and discuss how this study will address it. For example, if the results allow you to reject the null hypothesis, what are the implications? What would happen if you fail to reject the null hypothesis? Discuss the implications of your proposed study, the limitations of your study, and future research ideas and directions.
8. Implications: Provide a brief summary of your proposal and a powerful statement as to how your study would advance the field.
9. References: Include at least 10 scholarly sources in your Reference section. Be sure to use APA style throughout your paper.
