Should the Bamiyan Buddhas be Rebuilt
SHOULD THE BAMIYAN BUDDHAS BE REBUILT?(BUDDHISM) CUSTOM ESSAY
This critical paper concerns the
2001 destruction of two giant buddha statues at the Bamiyan cave complex
(Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan), and the aftermath of these events on the
world stage. For your paper, you are asked to weigh in on the current
debate over whether those buddha statues should be rebuilt (or not) by
answering the following question: “Should the Bamiyan Buddhas be
Rebuilt?”
In order to answer this seemingly
straightforward question, you will need to think through several
assumptions behind the question itself. In this respect, it might be
helpful to think of your paper as a “position piece” that addresses the
following: (a) how and why the fate of those buddha statues captured so
much international attention (media; academic; political), (b) what the
international “value” of those statues is, and how that value is
determined and discussed, and (c) what role, if any, the international
community should to play in the preservation of ancient Silk
Road/Buddhist cultural heritage sites in a region like war-torn
Afghanistan. Bound up in this debate is a particular definition of
“World Cultural Heritage” promoted most vigorously by UNESCO – and a key
issue you will want to consider in your response.
