CHOOSE NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGE
Choose your own New Testament passage. It is best to limit the scope of your passage, i.e., one or two verses or a brief passage that deals with one thought, teaching (that hangs together). This is known as a periscope Do not attempt to provide an exegesis for an entire chapter or an extremely long passage. It will be to your great advantage to choose a brief passage and unpack it thoroughly as indicated by the guidance provided in your syllabus. An exegesis should not be confused with a commentary where you simply provide your thoughts regarding the passage. Your analysis (theological and otherwise) may be part of the process, but this should be shaped and informed by what you find in the exegetical process. Again, as you complete your rough draft, please carefully consider the information (guidance) provided under “Exegesis” within your syllabus. It is important that you include each of the points noted below as part of your exegesis. Indeed, in your final product you will want to include many of these points as headings and subheadings within the body of your work. The information below is very informative and specific regarding the significant aspects of an exegesis. Additionally, I am providing you below a draft exegesis grading rubric which provides you with specific detailed information regarding areas you should address within the exegesis. While, there is no expectation that your draft exegesis should be complete, it will be extremely helpful for you to note in an abbreviated manner what you plan to include within your final exegesis product.

This will provide you with the time needed to locate and provide a quality outline and draft of your approach to your selected text. Please also provide a bibliography/works cited (academic sources) with the submission of your draft. Online sources that are academic in nature are permitted (through university library, etc.). Popular sources, i.e, from Wikipedia, sectarian church publications, etc. are not considered to be academic in nature and will not count toward the required number of academic sources. Dictionaries (biblical or otherwise) while permissible are not counted as academic sources. Once your draft is received, I will let you know if you are headed in the right direction. Exegesis: Complete an exegesis of a passage from the New Testament. Exegesis means to expound upon a text, to unpack a text of its many meanings. Elements of various type of criticism will be employed to develop further one’s ability to interpret the Bible. Please respond to the following items as you exegete the assigned passages from the Bible.
A draft of the exegesis is due and the final paper due later. This paper should be between 2,400 and 3,200 words in length. Please use APA format. The draft is worth 10% of the course grade and the final paper is worth 40% of the course grade.
Follow the outline below and answer the questions in each section using recommended sources. Keep the outline headings below as the subheadings of your exegesis.
a. Literary Criticism
1) Context: What follows and precedes your passage? Are your pages affected by this context?
2) Form Criticism: What is the literary form of your passage? Are there other places in the Bible (or related text) where this form is used and which help to interpret this passage?

3) Structure: Do you detect any particular structural pattern? (e.g., parallelism within your assigned book of the Bible). Describe the parts of your passage.
4) Redaction Criticism: Has your passage come through an editorial process? What changes have been made? Explain why certain changes have been made?
5) Key Words: What are the theologically important words in the passage? Do these words evoke any other parts of the Bible? Are these words used in a new way by the author of this passage? What do these words mean?
b. Theological Analysis
1) What does this passage say about the relationship with God?
2) What questions might this passage have addressed in the community for which it was originally written?

Document your exegesis carefully. Include sections of the assignment outline as subheadings for your paper. Be sure to use some material from the course bibliography for your exegesis, especially the Biblical Reference Books.
The following is the grading rubric I will use in evaluating your Exegesis Rough Draft. You should consider this rubric as you prepare your draft. While your draft is not expected to fully address each of the items noted below, it should contain at least some evidence that you plan to incorporate each within your final product.

Exegesis Rough Draft Grading Rubric
The following rubric provides you with a very detailed and specific picture of the strengths and weaknesses of your rough draft. There are three (3) symbols that are used to indicate the adequacy of your work: + (adequate), – (present but inadequate), 0 (topic/matter is not addressed). I realize that this is only a draft and is not intended to comprise or adequately address each of these areas. Still, my hope is that by considering this preliminary evaluation of the process, you will be in a better position to provide a quality Exegesis.

____ Exegetical Process in Evidence (Draft indicates that you are providing an exegesis, rather than a commentary, research paper of the passage)
____ Extensiveness (Thoroughness of draft provided helpful insight into intended direction)
____ APA Formatting, Grammar, Spelling, Sentence Structure
____ Draft Indicates that Adequate Number of “Academic” References will be Utilized
____ Appropriate Utilization of In-text Citations

____ Originality (Degree to Which the Draft is Student’s Work vs. Direct/Indirect Quotations)
____ Clear Introduction of the Passage (i.e., which passage are you addressing)
____ Contextual Treatment of the Passage (Addressing preceding and following passages. How do these passages affect, if they do, the passage you are addressing?)
