Answer one or more of the following prompts:
· Discuss the way/s in which Lanoe Falconer’s novella, “Cecilia de Noel,” illustrates and/or departs from the relationship between spiritualism and rationalism that Finucane describes.
· What do ghosts and/or believing in ghosts have to do with women in the novella? In other words, how are encounters with the numinous gendered in the novella?
· Explain George Atherley’s, the Stranger’s, and Cecilia de Noel’s differing views on ghosts. How do their views on ghosts differ from one another and what does gender have to do with their views?
· What is the meaning and import of Lindy’s question to George at the very end of the novella (the question that goes unanswered)? Why doesn’t/can’t George answer the question?

Lanoe Falconer’s novella, “Cecilia de Noel,” is about how people have encounters with ghosts through their religious views. As we seen in Finucane’s “The Thirst for Immortality,” the spiritualism and rationalism plays huge role .
‘‘The question is, do you want pretty colour or do you want clear daylight?’’(Falconer, 2)
‘’Fair play and no favour!’’ ( Falconer,2)
‘’So far from taking anything on trust, you must refuse to accept any statement whatsoever till it is proved so painly you can’t help believing it whether you like it or not ; just as a theorem in- -‘’
They were excluding the Mrs.Mallet because they know she saw the ghost and not afraid to talk about it which is not usual and acceptable at that time. Narrator used the word extraordinary when he describe the ghost. (5) For instanse when Ghosts seen as a stranger when Lady Atherley describes the noise of ghost she says ‘’such a strange noise, like the howling of a dog.’’(Lanoe Falconer, 2)
‘’Did she cook that omelette? Then I am sure she is perfectly respectable; and pray let her see as many ghosts as she cares to,especially if it leads to nothing worse than her taking a modarate quantitty of brandy.’’(4) If a woman cook well and do what they should do in order to take care of the house they get a chance to see what they want to do even if its seeing a ghosts.
‘‘It is such a pity that clever people can never see things as others do.’’( Falconer,4)
