COMPARE AND CONTRAST SOCRATES’ RULE BY THE PHILOSOPHER-KING WITH ARISTOTLE’S RULE BY THE GENTLEMAN
Compare and contrast Socrates’ rule by the philosopher-king with Aristotle’s rule by the gentleman. What understanding of wisdom, virtue, and politics is implied by each? Which (if either) do you think is a better account of politics and how it should be conducted? Defend and evaluate your answer.
HELP: The Philosopher King would be under divine birth according to certain formula. Theoretical, not likely to be a ruler. Very Unlikely! Must have wisdom, knowledge, to be able to control every aspect of a kingdom.
Complete knowledge. Through a Utopia, what a city would look like, if at its best. Rule of gentlemen = virtue, since of justice, wisdom = need practical wisdom. Study of ethics, politics,philosophy, rhetoric (verbal boxing) have time = leisure = in form of serious pursuits, have wealth, status = full citizen, more common than philosopher king.
