MGMT 8025-Perspective on Organizations & Implication for Leaders
MGMT 8025-Perspective on Organizations & Implication for Leaders
course Introduction
The word politics often conjures up a negative image. It often is related to game playing, pursuing self-interest at the expense of the common interest, and pressure-group lobbying. Due to this negative image, some managers try to disregard politics within an organization. However, Bolman and Deal present a positive side to politics if managed effectively. Viewed from the political frame, they define politics as “the realistic process of making decisions and allocating resources in a context of scarcity and divergent interests” (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 183).
This week, you will study the decision-making process that occurred in the U.S. space shuttle Challenger disaster and the political dynamics that impacted the decision making. Also this week, you examine the ways their ecosystems have an impact on organizations.
Course Objectives:
Students will:
•Analyze political dimensions of the U.S. space shuttle Challenger disaster
•Analyze interaction between ecosystems and organizational politics
Discussion: Political Dimensions (2-3 pages) Due24hrs
The Challenger disaster is a classic case study for observing the political frame and the dynamics that create a potentially negative outcome. Sometimes data and other facts are overlooked in the decision-making process to instead deal with political pressures of other groups and/or coalitions. The general public has heard that the root cause of the space Challenger was due to O-ring failure. In the case study, you may have noticed the actual root cause of the Challenger disaster—the push for approval from a “managerial perspective.”
Review this week’s resources, including the Challenger case study in Chapter 7 of the course text, Reframing Organizations. After reading the case on the Challenger disaster, develop your initial post. (Note: Use Exhibit 6.1, “Organizations and Modes of Political Rule,” on p. 153 in the course text, Images of Organization.)
The Assignment Requirements
Discuss as follows:
Brief Introduction
Identify and explain the modes of political influences in the U.S. space shuttle Challenger case study (Chapter 9 in Bolman & Deal).
Describe the impact of inter-organizational politics between NASA and Thiokol.
Describe the impact to the ecosystem that NASA was operating in at the time of the U.S. space shuttle Challenger disaster.
Explain how you think managers could have prevented the failure of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. Do not fall for the hindsight fallacy that you could have known then what you know now. Rather, think about the circumstances and conditions that existed at the time of the decision and make recommendations that could have mitigated the outcome that would make sense in the context of the actual decision.
If you reside anywhere outside of the United States, how might this information apply in an organization? (Please provide 1 peer reviewed Journal in APA format not exceeding 5 years (2012-2016)).
Conclusion
Note: Provide two academic resources in APA style and citation format to support your topic in response from question 1-5 above.

GENTLE REMINDER:
The initial post (questions 1-5 above) requires two academic citations – that means two resources, excluding the course textbooks. The resources are to be peer-reviewed within a five year period. The remaining posts (question 6 above) should have at least one citation that is peer-reviewed within a five year period. There are many good resources on politics in the workplace as well as the space challenger disaster so have fun!
