Research, recording and responding
Task 1
You are required to identify a suitable research
topicbased on the above case study and agree it with your tutor. Once the
research topic has been approved, you are required to:
-
Develop a suitable research question(s)
-
Determine and justify your research methodology.
-
Select and justify meaningful data collection
methods.
-
Undertake the research, evaluate the findings and
produce a fully referenced report.
The report should include
the following sections:
Introduction,
Rationale and Research questions
-
Justification of why you consider this topic worthy of study; this
could be related to the world of work and/or your own personal interests and
values and/or based on a hypothesis you wish to test and/or in terms of the
subject area(s) in general.
-
Defining the research problem or subject for exploration, aim and
objectives/research questions.
Literature
Review
-
Denscombe
(2003:p.293) cited by Mennen (2007:p.4) stated that literature review is “a
review of material that already exists on the topic in question. It should
demonstrate how the research being reported relates to previous research and if
possible how it gives rise to particular issues, problems and ideas that the
current research address”. Therefore, it helps readers to understand a
background of existing knowledge on a theme and clarify its significance for
the current research objectives and questions.
Research
Methodology
-
Outline what methodology you used in your research i.e. what you
did and how you did it. This should
include the philosophical approach, research strategy, research methods, data
collection and analysis methods, sampling techniques and limitations of the
study
Analysis and interpretationof
findings
-
Indicate and analyse the results of your research
-
Present findings using data which was analysed (using
graphs/tables).
Conclusion and Recommendations
-
Conclusion - This is a summary of the most significant results/findings.
You should not include any new material in this section. You could indicate
some areas where your research has limits or where further research would be
useful.
-
Recommendations - This includes suggestions for what needs to be done as
a result of your findings. Recommendations are usually listed in order of
priority.
References
and Appendices

This
provides evidence for:
-
P1. Record ideas
in appropriate forms
-
P2. Recognise
the importance of diagnostic research
-
P3. Expand the field of research
-
P4. Explore alternative possibilities
-
P5. Identify relevant and appropriate sources
-
P6. Evaluate the effectiveness of own research
and exploratory work
-
P7. Reflect on applying relevant theory to
practical understanding
-
P8.
Produce innovative work that communicates a personal response.
Task
2. (based on Task 1)
Each student is required to keep a journal
regarding the progress of his/her work. The journal should be reflective rather than descriptiveand
should therefore include
reflections/criticism of your own work as well as some of the feelings experienced.
This
provides evidence for
-
P6. Evaluate the effectiveness of own research
and exploratory work
-
P7. Reflect on applying relevant theory to
practical understanding
Task
3. (based on Task 1)
Based on your findings for Task 1, prepare
a short presentation to present your findings to an audience. This will be
followed by a short Q&A session where you are given the opportunity to
demonstrate the depth of your analysis and research.
You may provide presentation hand-outs to
the audience. One copy should be attached
to your task 1 assignment at the time of submission
This
provides evidence for
P8. Produce innovative work
that communicates a personal response.
