In narrative form, describe an experience you felt had an ethical
component. A business context is preferable, but the experience can be
personal or professional, and can involve you or someone else, as an
individual, a member of a work group or association, as an employee or
observer of a corporation. Or the issue can be something you’ve only
heard about or read about in the news.
Background. Write so that someone unfamiliar with you, the organization,
or the situation could understand what happened. As briefly as
possible, set the context: help the reader understand the structure,
culture, and values of the organization, your (or the decision maker’s)
personal values and background, and the job, its responsibilities, and
its place in the organization. Situation. Explain (1) what’s wrong (or,
in some cases, what’s right) with the situation or how it was handled
and (2) why it’s wrong (or right). The background and facts and the
“what’s wrong” statement should be brief. The “why it’s wrong” question
is important and should constitute the bulk of your discussion. Explain
the process you went through in analyzing the situation or in resolving
it. Were there any aids or impediments within the organization to
dealing with the situation? If your desired outcome would have differed
from the actual outcome, please describe.
